2. EU irked over China piracy
Europe is growing increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress China is making in the protection of intellectual property, EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson said. Speaking at an China-EU IPR seminar, Mandelson said Europe's patient approach is being tested by China's failure to deliver concrete results on IPR protection, and he hinted that Europe could take WTO action against China if the situation persists. "I urge the Chinese government to ensure a proper balance is restored. Europe has so far held back from testing China's practice on intellectual property protection in the WTO - preferring to prioritize dialogue and cooperation instead," Mandelson said. "But the sincerity of our approach, I must say, is being tested and I regret it is hard to see how much longer our patience can last if treatment is not improved," he warned. Ministry of Commerce Vice Minister Yu Guangzhou earlier acknowledged that China faces "issues" on the IPR front, but he said the government will take "concrete and positive" steps to tackle these issues. "The government has no intention of avoiding these issues," Yu said. He added that IPR issues will improve as China develops socially and economically. Yu also said China and Europe should tackle any problems through mutual understanding and cooperation, adding that both sides should take a long-term, strategic vision rather than rushing the process or backing away from difficulties.   [www.sina.com.cn, 2007.11.27]
