China's Ministry of Finance (MOF) said Wednesday (Nov. 28) it will allocate a further RMB47b to support rural education in the next three years until 2009. The new funds would be used to ensure the implementation of compulsory education in rural areas, a MOF official said. The total amount now devoted to rural education has reached RMB265.2b for the period between 2006 to 2010, up from RMB218.2b. Students from low-income families in the central and western regions started receiving subsidies from the this autumn semester. 6. Premier Wen : China aims at overall trade balance
China is not intentionally pursuing a trade surplus, but is aiming for an overall balance of trade, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday (Nov. 28) told a China-EU Business Summit. "We have, and will continue to, put in place measures aimed at expanding imports and promoting a more balanced bilateral trade," Wen said. French president Nicolas Sarkozy said he hopes to see moves towards an amicable settlement in disputes involving Groupe Danone and Chinese companies. Foreign developers and corporations will start to pay a land-use tax starting from Jan. 1, 2007, according to a notice issued by the State Administration of Taxation yesterday (Nov. 28).
