Panel discussion on new Internet video regulations

AmCham-China and the United States Information Technology Office (USITO) co-hosted a panel discussion on China's new Internet video regulation and what it could mean for those working in China's technology and entertainment industries.

Over 80 AmCham-China and USITO members attended the Chinese-language event held at Beijing's Capital Club.

The 'Regulations on Internet Video and Audio Program Services' which took effect January 31, 2008, were approved by both the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the Ministry of Information Industry. Under the new policy, web sites that provide video programming or allow users to upload video must obtain government permits, and applicants must be either state-owned or state-controlled companies.

English language notes from the discussion are available for AmCham-China members only.

Panelists included Mr. Alamusi, deputy director, Policy Committee, China E-Commerce Association; President, China E-Commerce Law Network (pictured above), Mr. Yu Yang, president and CEO, Analysys International Corp and Mr. Chen Jihong, attorney and partner, Zhonglun W&D Law Firm.

Mr Alamusi gave an overview of the new law.  Mr. Yu Yang followed with a discussion of the regulations from market standpoint and Mr. Chen Jihong explained the legal implications of the regulations.

USITO President Greg Shea gave the opening remarks and Dennis Ding from Sun Micosystems moderated the event, which was sponsored by the AmCham-China Media and Entertainment Forum.

AmCham member company Paul Weiss has a write up of the new regulations.
